Port Wine

November 9th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

There are literally hundreds of different species and hybrids of grapes. They come from all over the world, Australia, United States, France, Canada, South America just to mention a few locations. Each grape type lends certain qualities to the finished wine. By far the most poplular types of wine are white and red. White can be made from any grape providing that the skins are removed prior to fermenting. With red wines, the skins of the grape are included in the fermentation process.

Types of Port Wine

One of the most popular wines served at the dinner table is port wine. Port wine is a sweet wine that goes wonderfully as a dessert wine. Some of the best port wine in the world comes from Portugal, the Douro Valley in the northern provinces. Vineyards all over the world grow grapes for port wine. Port wine is fortified with distilled grape spirits after pressing to raise the alcohol content in the finished product. Because port wine is produced all over the world, it has many different versions.

The Properties of Port Wine

Port wine is a very rich, very sweet, very heavy wine. It also possesses a much higher alcohol content than most other wines do. This is true of all of the different styles of port wine that are available. The higher alcohol content is because of the way that the wine has been aged, either via reductive aging or oxidative aging. Reductive aging takes place whenever wine is matured and aged in sealed tanks with no exposure to air. On the other hand, wines that have matured in barrels with a small amount of exposure to oxygen have been through oxidative aging.

Vintage Port Wine

While vintage port wine is not as popular of a selection as some of the other varieties of port wine, it is truly Portugal’s flagship wine. It is made entirely from grapes that come from a vintage year. Of course, this causes this wine to be more expensive than many of the other port wines. With these wines, you will also discover that the flavor is a lot more concrete and pungent, which is why it is really worth the extra bit of money. Even this wine is usually paired with desserts, but you can also give it a try with a variety of other sweet tasting foods as well, so that you can determine your own personal preferences for this type of wine.

Red Wine Benefits

November 5th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Did you know that red wine is healthy? Yep the flavonoids or antioxidants are not found in white wine, although white wine is not unhealthy, it just doesn’t have all the red wine benefits. It’s important to understand the benefits so that we can get the absolute maximum of those health benefits.

More about the Benefits of Red Wine

If you recall, a few years ago, there was a poster that circulated around the internet of a man sitting in front of a gigantic wine goblet and the caption read “My doctor told me I can have one drink a day” No this is not the case with red wine. Studies done indicate that one glass of wine a day for women and two glasses for men actually lowers the risk of heart attack. The key is moderation. Obviously too much red wine isn’t good but in moderation it can be one of the more healthy things you can drink. The studies have shown that for middle aged people, the risk of heart disease is lowered by anywhere for 30 to 50 percent. Now that’s something to drink too.

There are also many other red wine benefits, such as the fact that it has been proven to help lower the LDL, or bad cholesterol in the body. This is important because by lowering your cholesterol, you are reducing the risk of blood clots forming and blood vessel damage being caused as a result of fat deposits.

It is important to only drink red wine in moderation however, and not start drinking too much just because you have heard that it is good for you. In fact, by drinking too much wine you are going to be putting yourself at more risk than before for conditions like obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, stroke, cardiac arrhythmia, and sudden cardiac death.

How does it Work?

Red wine is a particularly good source of antioxidants, and it is these which are beneficial for the body. Resveratrol is also found in red wine, and this substance helps by increasing HDL, or good cholesterol, and also by exhibiting various antioxidant properties that help to prevent blood clots and plaque formation in the arteries.

Research and studies have shown us that the red wine benefits are plentiful, but it is also important to realize that you have to maintain an otherwise healthy lifestyle at the same time. If you want to reap the benefits of something such as wine, then you should also be eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting lots of regular exercise.

Once your body is in generally healthy shape overall, then and only then will it really be able to prosper from the red wine benefits that are so touted today.

Wine Glasses Make the Occasion

October 10th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

People drink wine out of wine glasses for a reason. Can you imagine drinking a fine red wine out of a McDonald’s soft drink glass? It just isn’t done. Drinking wine out of wine glasses adds class and makes the occasion a fanciful one. Wine glasses have a distinctive look and they hold a certain amount of status. These are just a few of the reasons people use wine glasses. Never drink your wine out of any old glass. Do the wine justice by drinking out of wine glasses

Make Sure They Are Clean

This goes especially true if you are drinking from wine glasses at a restaurant. Next time you’re eating out and you’re drinking wine, take a look at the rim around your wine glasses. Are there any lipstick marks? Are there water spots or soap spots where the dishwasher didn’t do an adequate job? Not only is this disgusting, any type of dirt, grime or grease on a wine glass can take away from the taste of the wine. This is tragic, especially if the wine you’re drinking is expensive. You wouldn’t want to taint the taste of that great wine so make sure you inspect your wine glasses thoroughly before drinking from them.

Holding Them

When holding your wine glasses, you typically want to hold it by the stem with the bowl of the glass held in your palm. Of course, there is no right or wrong way to hold a wine glass, as long as you can drink from it. But if you are looking to show off your etiquette skills, you should study up on the proper way to hold your wine glass so that you don’t spill while you’re drinking and so you don’t offend your host if it’s a fancy dinner party, for example.

Cleaning

When you’re cleaning your glasses, it’s best to clean them by hand. That’s because wine glasses are so fragile. Wine glasses cleaned in the dishwasher can easily become broken and most glasses for drinking wine are not cheap. So make sure you clean them by hand and do a good job so as not to leave any smudges or lipstick marks that were mentioned earlier.

It is a long held tradition to drink wine from proper wine glasses. Everyone should support that tradition by drinking from correct wine glasses. You can choose from a multitude of fancy looking wine glasses. Choosing the right wine glasses adds to any occasion with wine.

Go away. Come back with wine.

A Guide to Merlot

September 30th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

One of the top wine producing regions in France for centuries now is the world-famous Bordeaux region in southwestern France. This region produces many brands of red Merlot. This region also has 50% more land devoted to vineyards than in any other area of France

Merlot from the Pomerol Area on the Bank of the Garonne River

There are more than 70 million cases of Merlot produced in Pomerol each year. This is not as difficult of a task as it sounds, considering that there are more than 22 thousand vineyards in Bordeaux, which cover approximately 280 thousand acres of land or 13 acres of land per vineyard. All of these different vineyards produce great wine. There a lot of these vineyards that actually produce and sell their own wine, however the rest of the vineyards sell their wine through one of the many cooperatives that are located in this region.

In this area, you will find about 60 different wine appellations that range from fair to world class and everything in between. Some of these wines date back to 1855, and the recipes have not changed much since then. You will also find that this wine is actually very affordable.

Merlot is actually the major red grape that comes from Bordeaux. Coming in at a distant second is Cabernet Sauvignon. Of course, there are also some other important Bordeaux red grape varieties that are also found in this area but they are not nearly as popular as Merlot. There are also some major white grapes that are found in this area. These include both the Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. This may interest you since the Pomerol region of Bordeaux is a small, rural area that primarily produces the red wine for which it is so well known.

Tourism in Pomerol

The wine chateaux are Pomerol’s main tourist attractions. For this reason, it is surprising that the world famous Chateau Petrus is not all that special to look at. In fact, many find them to be far from spectacular. This is one of those cases where you really cannot judge a book by its cover. Of course, this region is brimming with other sights to see as well.

Merlot is truly a popular wine of choice, enjoyed by wine drinkers all over the world. Along with the great Merlot from the Pomerol region of France which you will enjoy again and again, there is its noble cousin, Chateau Petrus. With either Merlot, one sip will confirm why they are such popular wines of choice.
